This pattern uses US stitch abbreviation. 

Thistle stitch needs a multiple of 7 sts + 2, add 2 ch for the foundation chain. In this example, chain 18.

FR. Ch 18, 1 dc in 4th ch from hook, sk 2 ch, 5 dc in next ch, sk 2 ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 ch*, repeat between ** to end. Turn.

Row 1. Ch 3, 2 dc in 1st dc, sk 3 dc, *1 dc in sp between 2nd and 3rd dc of group, sk 3 dc, 5 dc in sp between next 2 dc, sk 3 dc*, repeat between ** to end, ending with 3 dc in sp between last dc and 3 ch. Turn.
