Crochet Irish Flower ~ Free Pattern

This pattern uses the Old Irish Fifth Wheel motif in a modern way. :) I did the same with the Irish Fern pattern here.

In this pattern, I crochet over the cord. This is a common Irish Crochet Technique. You can learn more here.

Crochet Materials:

Crochet hook 5.0 mm and 4.00 mm.

Yarn: 100 % Acrylic in yellow, dark pink, light pink, light blue, Moda Vera Flurry Yarn, and Moda Vera Fayette Yarn multicolor.

Crochet Flower Pattern ~ Step by Step free pattern

This is an Irish Crochet Wheel with a Modern Twist. This is the pattern of the traditional Fifth Wheel Irish Crochet.

This pattern uses US stitch abbreviation.

Use 100 % Acrylic yarn and Moda Vera Fayette Yarn multicolor. Use crochet hook size 5.0 mm

Begin by using Yellow yarn.

Round 1. Over a single cord foundation crochet: 1 sc + 1 hdc + 3 dc + 1 hdc + 1 sc, (1 sc over the cord foundation on the 4th sc of the ring) x 5.

Round 2. *Over a single cord foundation crochet 1 sc on the 2nd of the 3 empty sc stitches of the ring and behind the little leaves of the 1st row, 17 sc over a single cord*, repeat between ** 5 times, end with 1 sl st in the 1st sc on the ring, 4 sl st on the first 4 sc of the first 17 chain scallop.

Round 3. *Ch 4 (at the repeats make 1 dc instead of ch 3), (1 dc + 1 ch)x 9, sk 7 sc*, repeat between ** 5 times, 1 sl st in 3rd ch, ch 1.

Change yarn to Moda Vera Fayette Yarn multicolor.

Round 4. *In each dc and ch sp crochet: 4 sc + 1 picot + 4 sc + 1 picot + 4 sc + 1 picot + 4 sc + 1 picot  *, repeat between ** all around, finish with a sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

Use light pink yarn.

Ch 2, turn, 12 sc in 3rd ch from hook, sl st in ch 2.

Round 2. 17 hdc over 12 sc, sl st in 1st hdc.

Round 3. 21 dc over the 17 hdc.

Crochet nose

Use dark pink yarn.

Crochet over a single cord: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc. Fasten off. Use a sewing needle and stitch into a ball. Attach to middle of face.

Attach the face of the flower in the middle of the Irish flower.

Attach doll eyes.

Crochet eyelids

Use light blue yarn.

Row 1. 5 sc over a cord, turn.

Row 2. 1 sc in each sc to end. turn.

Row 3. 1 sl st in each sc to end. Turn.

Stitch over the doll eyes.

Stalk

Use a stick.

Use pink yarn and 4.00 mm hook.

Crochet a chain of single crochet the length of the stick until you it can wrap around a stick. Use a sewing needle and stitch together.

Crochet Leaves

Make 3.

Use Moday Vera Flurry Yarn. Use crochet hook 4.00 mm.

Crochet 3 x hdc over the cord.

Attach to stalk.

With red yarn.

Crochet 2 identical.

Begin crochet a wheel

Round 1. Crochet 5 dc over the cord. Sl st in 1st dc.

Round 2. (1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc) x repeat across. 7 dc all up.

Round 3. 1 dc in every dc. 7 dc all up.

Round 4. (Ch 5, 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in every chs back to circle, sl st in next st on circle) x 7. You now have 7 ‘arms’. Sl st up 1st arm until you are on the tip of the arm.

Round 5. (Ch 6, sl st on top of next arm) x repeat across, sl st in 1st arm.

Begin crochet branch 1:

Round 6. (Ch 3, turn, 3 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in next ch, ch 3, turn, 3 dc in 2nd ch from hook) x repeat 5 times. You know have made 10 petals on the branch facing opposite direction. Sl st down one side of the branch and continue sl st across 6 chs on 6-ch sp. Turn.

Begin crochet branch 2:

Round 7. Ch 7, sl st on top of 2nd petal branch 1. Turn. 1 dc in next ch, 1 htr in next 2 chs, 1 tr in next 3 chs, 1 dtr in next ch. Turn. Ch 12, sl st on top of 4th petal branch 1. Turn. 1 dc in next 3 chs, 1 htr in next 3 chs, 1 tr in next 3 chs, 1 dtr in next 3 chs, Turn.  Ch 15, 1 sl st in 6th petal on branch 1. Turn. 1 dc in next 3 chs, 1 htr in next 3 chs, 1 tr in next 3 chs, 1 dtr in next 3 chs, 1 ddtr in next 3 chs. Turn. (Ch 5, sk 2 sts, 1 dc in next st) x 4, ch 5, sl st on top of 8th petal branch 1. Turn. (1 dc in next ch, 1 htr in next 2 chs, 1 tr in next 2 chs, 1 dtr in next st, 1 dtr in next ch, 1 tr in next 2 chs, 1 htr in next 2 chs, 1 dc in next st) x repeat across 5 ch sps and sts, sl st back down to circle. Crochet pupils

Crochet 2 identical.

Wrap yarn around your finger 8 times, 12 sc in ring, sl st in 1st sc. Continue crochet 12 sc in ring until you have a thick button. Sl st in 1st sc.

Ch 1, sc in same sc, ch 7, turn, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in each of next 2 chs, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in same sc in ring, *sc in next sc, ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in each of next 2 chs, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in same sc*, rep between ** around, sl st in 1st sc. Make Iris

With Green yarn. Use a double cord about 50 cm (20 inches). Use a sewing needle and thread the double cord through the side of pupils and the edge branches. Continue all the way around. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Crochet Instructions

Wind yarn 20 times around your index finger. Slip loop off the finger and tie the ring off with a sl st.

Round 1. 21 sc in ring, sl st in 1st sc. Crochet the 1st ‘arm’ as follows: Ch 10, fasten a safety pin to ch 10 to secure work, turn, 20 sc back over 10 ch, sl st in next sc round 1. Turn. (ch 4, sk 4 sc on arm, sc in next sc) x 4. Turn. In each 4- ch sp on arm crochet 6 sc, sk next sc on round 1, sl st in next sc. Turn. Crochet 2nd ‘arm’ as follows: Ch 10, sl st in 3rd sc in 2nd loop from the centre. Turn. Crochet 20 sc in 10-ch sp, sl st in next sc of round 1. Complete arm as before. Crochet 5 more ‘arms’. Fasten off. Re-attach yarn in ‘arm 1’ where safety pin is, and attach with sl st in 3rd sc in 2nd loop from centre ‘arm’ 5, sl st in next st to secure it.

Irish Crochet with chunky yarn.

Irish crochet is traditionally done with fine yarn and small hooks. I, however, enjoy crochet irish crochet with chunky yarn and larger hooks as it gives it a contemporary look that can be used to make unique styles of clothing.

Crochet Rose

With Pink.

Over the cord crochet 12 sc, sl st in 1st sc to form a ring.

Round 1. Ch 1, sc in same sc, ch 3, sk next sc, *sc in next sc, ch 3, sk next sc*, repeat between ** around. (6 ch sp).

Round 2. Sl st in ch 3 sp, ch 1, (sc, 5 dc, sc) in each 3 ch sp, sl st in 1st sc.

Round 3. Ch 1, crochet behind petals on previous round, sc around 1st sc of round 3, ch 4, *sc around next sc of round 3, sc around next sc of round 3, ch 4*, repeat between ** around, end with sl st in 1st sc.

Round 4. Sl st in 4 ch sp, ch 1, (sc, 7 dc, sc) in each 4 ch sp around, end with sl st in 1st sc.

Round 5. Ch 1, crochet behind petals on previous round, sc around 1st sc of round 4, ch 5, *sc around next sc round 4, sc around nect sc round 4, ch 5*, repeat between ** around, end with sl st in 1st sc.

Crochet Leaves (make 5)

With Blue.

Leaf 1.

Round 1. Ch 8, sc in 3rd ch from hook, sc in each ch to end, ch 3, sc in 5 chs opposite side of foundation ch.

Round 2. Ch 2, turn, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 5 sc, (sc, ch 3, sc) in 3-ch sp, sc in each of 5 sc opposite side of leaf.

Round 3. *Ch 2, turn, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 6 sc, (sc, ch 3, sc) in 3-ch sp, sc in each of next 5 sc opposite side of leaf*, repeat between ** until you have 1 center point and 5 side points on side 1, end with ch 2 on 5th point on last side.

Round 4. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 6 sc, 2 sc in 3-ch sp, sl st in any sc on Round 6 of Rose, sc in lame 3 ch sp leaf, sl st in next sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Leaf 2-5.

Rep leaf 1 until you have 1 center point and 5 side points on side 1, end with ch 2 on 5th point last side, ch 2, sl st in point of previous leaf closest to flower. Turn. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 6 sc, 2 sc in ch-3 sp, sl st around next sc on round 6 of Rose, sc in 3-ch sp leaf, sl st in next sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

With Black yarn make a little 4+ch loop on tip of leaf 1 and 5. String yarn through to use as necklace. This pattern will also look good as wall and/or window decor.
