Cluster Stitch Crochet tutorial

Cluster stitches are worked as incomplete stitches, leaving increasing number of loops on the crochet hook. When the required number of loops are on hook, yo, and pull through all loops on hook. You can use either Single crochet stitches, double crochet stitches, or any crochet stitches when creating Cluster crochet stitches, depending on how you want your work to look like.

Sometimes cluster stitches are also joined at the bottom as picture below shows.

Free Pattern using Cluster Stitches

Baby Jacket with bonnet. 

This pattern was originally published in yarncraft for tots and toddlers.

This pattern uses UK stitch abbreviation.

Use crochet hook size 3.

100 % cotton yarn.

Ch 68, turn.

1st row: Draw last st of ch up to form a loop, the height of a tr, yo hook, insert hook in 1st st and draw yarn through, yo, insert hook in same st and draw yarn through, yo and draw through 4 loops, yo and draw through remaining 2 loops, * yo, insert hook in next st, draw yarn through, yo, insert hook in same st, draw yarn through, yo and draw through 4 loops, yo and draw through remaining 2 loops, repeat from * 10 times (12 clusters in front), ch 2, work 1 cluster in each of next 10 sts (sleeve), ch 2, work 1 cluster in each of next 12 sts, ch 2, 1 cluster in each of next 12 sts (back), ch 2, 1 cluster in each of next 10 sts (sleeve), ch 2, 1 cluster in each of last 12 sts (front), ch 1, turn, draw last ch up the height of a tr.

2nd row: A cluster in top of each of first 12 clus­ters, 1 cluster in ch 2 space, ch 2, 1 more cluster in same space, 1 cluster in each of next 10 clus­ters, 1 cluster in ch 2 space, ch 2, 1 more cluster in same space, 1 cluster in each of next 12 clus­ters, 1 cluster in ch 2 space, ch 2, 1 cluster in each of next 12 clusters, 1 cluster in ch 2 space, ch 2, 1 cluster in same space, 1 cluster in each of next 10 clusters, 1 cluster in ch 2 space, ch 2, 1 cluster in same space, 1 cluster in each of last 12 clusters, turn. Continue increasing 1 cluster in each front, 2 clusters in each sleeve and 4 clusters in the back until there are 4 rows in all worked with White, then tie in Pink and continue to increase in same way for 4 more rows.

9th row: Work to first increasing space, work 1 cluster in space, sk the 24 sleeve clusters, work 1 cluster in next space, continue across back in same way (working 2 clusters in space at center back), work 1 cluster in next space, sk the sleeve clusters, work 1 cluster in next space and continue across front.

Continue working for 9 more rows, increasing in center of back only. Fasten off.

Sleeves: Join yarn at underarm and work 7 rows of clusters, joining each row with slip st in first cluster. With White, work 3 rows of dc around lower edge of sleeve and around neck edge.

Shell Edge: With White, work a row of shells (ch 3, work 4 tr in same st, sk 2 or 3 sts on edge, slip st in next st) around entire jacket and cuffs, spacing evenly to lay flat. With Pink, cro­chet cord and run through DC at neck edge; fin­ish with White tassel at each end.

Bonnet

Ch 5, join with slip st in 1st st.

1st round: Ch 3, 19 tr in ring, join with slip st in 3rd st of ch 3.

2nd round: Ch 4, 1 tr in each tr, with ch 1 between trs, join with slip st in 3rd st of ch 4.

3rd round: 1 cluster in each tr, with ch 1 between clusters, join with slip st in tip of 1st cluster.

4th and 5th rounds: 1 dc in each st, working through back thread only.

6th round: 1 cluster in each st, join in tip of 1st clus­ter.

7th round: * Draw loop on hook out ½ inch, draw yarn through, making a ch st, insert hook between loop and single strand of this ch and work a dc, repeat from * again, sk 1 cluster, 1 dc in next cluster (knot stitch), repeat from star around, working half a knot stitch in last cluster, join with slip st in 1st knot stitch.

8th and 9th rounds: * 1 dc over double loop at right of 1st knot, 1 dc over double loop at left of knot, ch 2, repeat from * around.

10th round: Work a knot stitch in each dc, turning when within 3 inches of end of round. Work 2 rows dc, working back and forth. Continue working 1 row knot stitch and 2 rows dc until there are 4 rows of knot stitch on front of bonnet. Work 2 rows dc around entire bonnet edge.

Ruffle: With White, work 2 rows knot stitch into each dc of the 18th row. With Pink, work 1 dc in each knot st, with ch 2 between dcs. Fasten off.

Make 2 rosettes of satin ribbon, leaving 12 inches for ties and attach to each side of bonnet.
