Ball Jointed Doll (BJDs) Make-Up Inspiration.

Creating a ball-jointed doll (BJD) through crochet involves several steps to make the different parts of the doll and assemble them with joints. Here’s a basic overview of how you could approach this project:

1. Gather Materials: You’ll need yarn in the color of your choice, crochet hooks (size appropriate for your yarn), stuffing, and jointing materials like plastic or metal joints, or crochet loops to create joints.
2. Plan Your Design: Decide on the size and proportions of your BJD and create a pattern for each part (head, torso, limbs) with increases and decreases to achieve the desired shapes.
3. Crochet the Parts:
   • Head: Start with a magic ring and work in continuous rounds to create a sphere. Stuff lightly as you go.

How I made Badgergurl

Badgergurl is a creation inspired by the Norse beliefs in having a fylgja. In my own fylgja vision quest, I discovered my fylgja is Badger. I thus made a doll who is half human, half badger. Or perhaps she is half fairy and half badger.

I crochet her dress and decorated it with tatted flowers. I also crochet her boots and decorated them with tatted flowers as well.

I began tatting a few years ago and it has transformed many of my crochet pieces.

Tatting has experienced a resurgence in popularity in recent years, as contemporary artisans and crafters rediscover the joy of creating these timeless lace designs. In addition to traditional patterns, modern tatters often experiment with colors, textures, and innovative techniques, breathing new life into this age-old art form.

Tatting to the decoration rescue

One of the defining features of tatting is the creation of picots, small loops or spaces between stitches, which contribute to the lace’s airy and intricate appearance. Tatters carefully control the tension of the thread to ensure uniformity in the loops and knots, resulting in a visually stunning piece of lacework.

In a world where digital entertainment and high-tech gadgets dominate children’s playtime, it’s refreshing to take a step back and explore the simplicity and beauty of traditional crafts. One such delightful craft is the crochet paperweight doll – a charming combination of two beloved wonderful outcome, practicality and decoration. This crochet doll will capture the hearts of both young and old.

Creating a crochet paperweight doll requires neat crochet stitching as you will fill the inside with rice. I also line the inside with fillings. This doll got decorated with beautiful craft flowers.

Row 2 – 4. Crochet Solomon’s knot. Each row begins with 3 loops instead of 2, EXCEPT row 4 which begins with 2 loops. This is to avoid a floppy edge. Turn.

Row 5. 3 sc in loop, 1 sc in sc. Continue to end. Turn.

Row 6. Ch 3, *1 bullion st in next st, 1 tr in next st, turn, sk 1 tr, 1 bullion st around previous bullion st, turn, 1 tr in next st (next to last tr made)*. Continue between ** to last 2 sc. Edging: Crochet edge around the side of row 7 to 15 both sides using row 6 as pattern.

The dress was a simple triangle shape which I wrapped around the barbie and stitched the side together. I then attached blue yarn at the bottom and crocheted around the edge of the dress.

Decide the length of the hair and begin rolling up the hair in the desired length. You will also need glue, a sewing machine, and two types of ribbon: wide width and narrow width (see pic above). In this tutorial, I had to glue the wider ribbon to the doll head.

This was to give it a surface that is easier to glue the hair onto. You might not need to do this. You will need the narrow width ribbon to stitch the hair onto. This is to create the hairpieces that you will glue to the doll hair in a circular fashion.

Lay the ribbon across the middle of the yarn as pic above shows. Stitch with long stitches across the ribbon on the sewing machine. Lay all the hair across to face one side. Stitch across the ribbon with cross stitches on the sewing machine. The result will look like the picture below.

Glue the hair in a circular motion around the head (see pics below).

Once all the hair is glued on, you can give her a haircut. The haircut part is the best part. Now you can be creative and pretend you are Frédéric Fekkai. :)

Doll Upcycle begins with Great Hair

Doll upcyle is one of my favourite hobbies. The doll hair is my favourite part.

These barbie trousers is part of a FULL and FREE doll makeover project. I have already made the top and this pattern is also free and available on this website. Click on link below to get the barbie top.

Crochet Materials

Crochet hook size 1.9 mm

100 % cotton in light blue.

Sewing needle (to assemble and weave in ends).

Scissors

Crochet Barbie Trousers pattern step by step with pictures.

This pattern uses US stitch abbreviation.

Make 2 identical motifs.

Each mortif is one leg of the trousers. Row 12-15 shapes the back and front of the upper part of the trousers.

Row 1. 40 chainless single crochet. Turn.

Row 2-5. 1 sc in each sc. Turn.

Row 6. 1 sc in next 30 sc. Turn.

Row 7 – 9. 1 sc in 30 sc. Turn.

Row 10. 1 sc in 15 sc. Turn.

Row 11. 1 sc in 15 sc. Do not turn.

You will now begin to shape what will be the back of the trousers.

Row 12. 2 hdc in last sc, 1 hdc in each sc up to the top of row 6. Turn.

Row 13. (Skip 1 hdc, 1 hdc in next hdc) x 2, 1 hdc in every hdc to end, do not crochet in the sc. Turn.

Row 14. 1 hdc in hdc. Fasten off.

You will now begin to shape the front of the trousers.

Row 15. Reattach yarn in first sc opposite side (row 1), 1 sc innext 8 sc, turn.

Row 16 – 17. 1 sc in 8 sc. Turn. Fasten off after row 17.

Row 12 to 17 shapes the upper part of the trousers. When you assemble the trousers, stitch row 17 together at the front. Begin stitching row 14 together at the back, but only halfway down the row 14. Tuck the remaining half of row 14 in and stitch to the front trouses.

Wrap the length of trousers around the legs and stitch together. Fold the end of trousers up around the ankles to give the appearence of a heamed seam.

How to crochet barbie outfits

Crocheting Barbie outfits are easy, but you will ahve to use a very small hook and quite fine yarn. I use 100 % cotton and 1.9 mm yarn.

In this post, I gave Elsa a remake. I also made her a wig. In a previous barbie makeover, I stitched yarn directly to the barbie head (see image below), but this time, I made a wig using doll hair.

To make this crochet top, you will need to make 2 identical motifs.

Materials

Use a small crochet hook size 1.9 mm.

Use 100 % cotton yarn.

A sewing needle to weave in the ends and attach the 2 motifs.

1st Motif.

Row 1. Begin by crochet 7 chainless sc. Turn.

Row 2 – 9. 1 sc in each sc. Turn.

Row 10. 2 sc in next 3 sc, 1 sc in each of the remaining sc. Turn.

Row 11. 1 sc in each sc to end. Turn.

Row 12. Rep row 10. Turn.

Row 13. Rep row 11. Turn.

Row 14. 2 sc tog, 1 sc in remaining sc to end. Turn.

2nd Motif.

Row 1-9 same as 1st Motif.

Row 10. 1 sc in each sc to last 3 sc, 2 sc in each of the last 3 sc. Turn.

Row 11. 1 sc in sc to end. Turn.

Row 12. Repeat row 10. Turn.

Row 13. Rep row 11. Turn.

Row 14. 1 sc in each sc to last 2 sc, 2 sc tog.

Stitch the row 1 together at the back of the doll.

Stich row 14 together, but leave 7 sc open as image shows. Use the leftover string as a cord around the neck.

Weave in the ends using a sewing needle.

How to make Life Size patterns using crochet Doll patterns

If you multiply the stitches with 7 or 8, and use a larger hook such as 5.5 mm, then it is possible to recreate a doll pattern to become a real size pattern. :) You might also ahve to change yarn size to one that fits better around a larger size hook.

Aluminium wire.

Copper wire (28 gauge).

Crochet yarn 100 % cotton in white for main body and black for eyes. 100 % acrylic curly brown yarn for mane and tail.

Sewing needle.

Craft plyers.

Back legs: Cut 30 cm (12 inches) two pieces of aluminium wire. Wrap 28 gauge copper wire at both ends to attach the two pieces of aluminium wire. Bend in half.

Front legs: Cut 25 cm (10 inches) two pieces of aluminium wire. Wrap 28 gauge copper wire at both ends to attach the two pieces of aluminium wire. Bend in half.

Main part of body: Cut 15 cm (6 inches) two pieces of aluminium wire. Attach the two pieces of aluminium wire to back and front legs about 1 cm apart.

Neck and Head (made in one): Cut 22 cm (8.5 inches) pieces of two aluminium wires to be neck and head. Attach at the front where the nose is with 28 gauge wire. Bend neck and ears and nose using plyers.

Separate face of horse and top of head with 28 gauge copper wire. Bend the aluminium wire on top of head to point up like ears.

Wire 100 cotton yarn around wires until they are all covered. make sure you do the ears individually. The ears are the only parts that are done individually.

Crochet horse before eyes, mane, and tail.

Crochet Back legs horse.

Begin crochet back legs with 23 scs around each legs, 3 scs between legs around where the body is attached to back legs. Turn.

Row 1. Crochet back with sc in 23 sc each leg inserting the hook in the first row of scs.

Row 2. Crochet sc in back legs and inserting the hook in the first row of scs.

Row 3. Scs in scs inserting the hook in the last row of scs (row 2).

Row 4-5. Scs in scs inserting the hook in scs row 4.

Row 6. Sc in 23 sc, 2 sc in next 3 scs, sc in 23 sc inserting the hook in the last row of scs (row 5)

Row 7. Sc in sc, inserting hook in sc row 6.

Begin upper leg and crochet 22 sc down the leg, turn, sc in 22 sc, sl st across front of body, 22 sc down other front leg, turn, sc in 22 sc.

Row 1. Sc in sc, turn, sc in sc, sl st in sl st across front of body, sc in sc, turn, sc in sc. Turn.

Crochet down one leg at a time.

Row 2 – 4. Sc in sc. Turn.

Row 5. Sl st in next 9 sc, sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next 6 sc. Turn.

Row 6. Sc in sc (do not sl st in sl st). Turn.

Row 7-8. Sc in sc. Turn.

Row 9. Sl st in next 7 sc, sc in sc. Turn.

Begin with head. Sc up head, split up the ear and half down neck, continue up other side neck and ear, and sc around sc down head. Turn.

The best thing about this crochet horse is that it can be shaped into all different poses which creates a very unique look.

This crochet Mermaid is made in a very peculiur manner. Instead of crocheting rows and rounds, I crochet a chainless single crochet cord. The chainless single crochet cord was shaped into the different Mermaid parts and stitched together using a sewing needle. The head, arms, and torso was made this way. The Mermaid tail was created by stitching together yarn that was already folded into loops. This type of yarn is called Loopy Yarn.

Crochet Materials

Crochet hook size 2.0

Crochet yarn: 100 % Acrylic 4 ply in light pink(body), red (hairband and mouth), black (eye), yellow, green (for the bikini), and white(eye). Loopy Yarn for Mermaid tail.

Crochet Mermaid Step by Step.

Begin creating a Chainless SC cord and turn it into a round ball as the image below shows. Create another Chainless SC cord (about 15 scs long) and at the end crochet fingers as follows: ch 2, turn and sl st in last sc, ch 2, turn, and sl st in same sc). Make 2 arms. Crochet torso by folding a long Chainless SC cord into half. Crochet breast by folding a shorter cord the same way. Fasten the cords into place using a sewing needle. Stitch the body parts together.

When you crochet nose, you simple crochet: ch 2, turn, sl st in 2nd ch from hook. Use a sewing needle and stitch it into a ball and attach it to face using sewing needle. Stitch the eyes by creating the eyeball the same way you made the nose. Stitch on black using a sewing needle. Stitch on eyelids. Stitch on a mouth.

Attach hair the same way you would tassels.

How to crochet Doll Leg and Foot

This is a very simple pattern that shapes of an L and is the perfect shape for a doll leg and foot. If you want it to be bigger, you simply use a larger crochet hook and you increase the foundation chains. 

Crochet Material

Crochet Hook size 4.0 mm (any size will do depending on the size of your doll).

Yarn: Yellow 100 % Acrylic.

Scissors.

Sewing needle.

Crochet Doll Leg Pattern

Row 1. Ch 11, turn, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next 6 chs, 2 sc in remaining 3 chs to end, continue crochet underneath: 2 chs in next same 3 chs, 1 sc in remaining chs including turning chs.

Row 2. Sl st in next 10 sc, 2 hdc in next 6 sc, sl st in remaining scs to end. Fasten off.

Fold in half and stitch the sides together.

Use light pink yarn and ch 8, turn, 2 hdc around cord. Fasten off. Stitch to body below head.

Crochet Mermaid Doll Amigurumi Pattern

I hope you enjoyed this cute Mermaid. Once you have finished crochet the tail, body, head, and arms, you can then stitch on the ‘bikini’. I used sewing thread. I also used sewing thread to stitch on a little mouth. Eyes were created by stitching on eyelids over brown felt. I stitched a little nose on by stitching back and forth in the middle of the face. For ears, I simply stitched on a looop of yarn each side.

Hair. 4 ply light blue yarn is used, however, the threads are separated which creates a curly look. Stitch on top of the head using a sewing needle. Stitch on the same way you would stitch on tassels.

How to felt your crochet doll

Put your doll in with some towels into the washing machine on 90 degrees. This will shrink the wool fibres as it tumbles around in the washing machine. The towels aids in the smoothing of the wool fibers. The crochet doll will shrink and smooth out.

Crochet baby doll face

Stitch on eyes using white and black yarn. Stitch on mouth using red yarn. I used pastel sticks and turned the cheeks and nose redish, and the eyelids blue.

Crochet doll fingers and toes adjustment.

Use a sewing needle and light pink wool. Stitch the fingers and toes on by inserting the hook either side and pulling on the strings to give the impressions of fingers and toes.
