Peonies are generally considered low-maintenance plants, and they are well-loved for their large, fragrant blooms. However, like any plant, they have specific care requirements. Here are some aspects to consider when it comes to maintaining peony flowers:

**1. Planting Location:

Peonies prefer well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. They should be planted in a location with full sun to partial shade. Adequate sunlight is crucial for blooming.

**2. Soil Preparation:

Before planting, amend the soil with organic matter, such as compost, to improve fertility and drainage. Well-draining soil is essential to prevent waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot.

**3. Watering:

While peonies are relatively drought-tolerant once established, they benefit from regular watering, especially during dry periods. Water the plants deeply, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root issues.

**4. Support for Heavy Blooms:

Peony flowers are large and can become heavy, causing the stems to droop. Providing support, such as peony rings or stakes, can help keep the plants upright and protect the blooms.

**5. Mulching:

Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the peonies to help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Mulching also protects the shallow roots of peonies.

**6. Fertilization:

Peonies typically don’t require excessive fertilization. A balanced, slow-release fertilizer applied in the spring is usually sufficient. Avoid over-fertilizing, as too much nitrogen can lead to lush foliage but fewer blooms.

**7. Pruning:

Peonies benefit from pruning to remove dead or diseased foliage and spent blooms. Cut back the stems to ground level in late fall or early spring. Proper pruning helps improve air circulation and reduces the risk of diseases.

**8. Disease Prevention:

Peonies can be susceptible to diseases like botrytis blight and powdery mildew. Providing good air circulation, spacing plants adequately, and avoiding overhead watering can help prevent these issues.

**9. Dividing:

Peonies can become overcrowded over time, leading to reduced blooming. Divide peony plants every 5-10 years to rejuvenate them. This is typically done in the fall.

**10. Pest Management: – Keep an eye out for common pests such as ants, which are attracted to the nectar produced by peony buds. However, ants do not harm peonies and are generally considered beneficial.

In summary, while peonies are generally low-maintenance, they do benefit from some care and attention. Providing the right planting conditions, proper watering, occasional fertilization, and addressing any issues promptly will help ensure healthy and beautiful peony blooms.

Fall and spring are the best times to plant Peonies.

Learn more about Peonies on Better Homes and Gardens Website here.

What are the downside of Peonies?

As fall approaches, peony foliage tends to turn yellow and then brown. While this is a natural part of the plant’s lifecycle, the drooping and decaying foliage may not be visually appealing in the garden.

Peonies can be slow to establish after planting, and it may take a few years for them to reach their full blooming potential. Gardeners should be patient during the initial years and provide the necessary care for the plants to establish strong root systems.

Peony stems can be relatively brittle, and mishandling or harsh weather conditions may lead to breakage. Providing support during windy periods and taking care when cutting blooms for arrangements can help prevent damage.

Peonies are susceptible to botrytis blight, a fungal disease that can affect the leaves and flowers, causing browning and decay. Good air circulation, proper spacing, and avoiding overhead watering can help prevent this disease.

I have written about how to treat fungal disease in plants the natural way here.

Peony buds produce a sweet nectar that attracts ants. While ants don’t harm the peonies, their presence can be seen as a downside for those who want to bring cut peonies indoors. Rinsing the flowers before bringing them inside can help reduce the number of ants.

The large, heavy blooms of peonies may require support to prevent the stems from drooping or breaking. Without proper support, the flowers may be susceptible to damage from rain or wind.

Hydrangeas are beloved flowering shrubs known for their large and showy blooms, making them popular in gardens, landscapes, and floral arrangements. There are several species and cultivars of hydrangeas, each with its unique characteristics.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Hydrangeas generally thrive in well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. They prefer partial shade but can tolerate varying degrees of sunlight, depending on the species.

Adequate moisture is essential for hydrangeas, especially during hot summer months.

Most hydrangeas prefer partial shade, especially in the afternoon when the sun is more intense. In hotter climates, providing some shade during the hottest part of the day can help prevent stress on the plants.

Well-draining soil with a pH that can be manipulated is ideal for hydrangeas. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil, with a pH range of 5.5 to 6.5. The soil should be rich in organic matter to retain moisture.

Hydrangeas have high moisture requirements, and they do best in consistently moist but not waterlogged soil. Adequate watering is crucial, especially during dry periods. Mulching around the base of the plants helps retain soil moisture.

In areas with extreme cold or hot temperatures, providing some protection can benefit hydrangeas. Mulching around the base of the plants in winter can help insulate the roots, and providing afternoon shade in hot climates can prevent heat stress.

Different hydrangea species and varieties have varying growing requirements. For example:

Bigleaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) may benefit from protection against harsh winter winds.

Panicle hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata) are generally more cold-hardy and heat-tolerant.

Smooth hydrangeas (Hydrangea arborescens) are known for their adaptability and resilience.

What are the different types of Hydrangea variations?

Carnations, scientifically known as Dianthus caryophyllus, are charming and versatile flowers that have been cultivated for centuries. Native to the Mediterranean region, carnations have become one of the most popular and widely cultivated flowers globally.

Carnations are known for their hardiness and resilience, making them suitable for garden beds, borders, and containers. By following these care guidelines, you can enjoy the beauty of carnations in your garden with relatively low maintenance.

Winter Care of Carnations

In regions with cold winters, providing some winter protection, such as mulching around the base of the plant, can help the carnations survive and thrive in the following growing season.

Do Carnations Get Pests and Diseases?

Carnations can be susceptible to common garden pests like aphids and spider mites. Regularly inspect the plants for signs of infestation and take appropriate measures, such as using insecticidal soap. Good air circulation and proper spacing can help prevent fungal diseases.

What are natural fungal treatments?

Organic flower growers are known to use baking soda spray as a natural way to get rid of fungus. Some growers use Neem oil spray, Garlic spray, Copper spray, and even compost Tea spray. Below are some of the recipes for natural fungal treatments used by some growers.

Neem Oil:

Neem oil is a natural fungicide and insecticide. It can help control various fungal diseases, including black spot and powdery mildew.

Mix neem oil with water according to the instructions on the product and spray it on the rose foliage, covering both sides of the leaves.

Baking Soda Solution:

Baking soda has fungicidal properties and can be effective against powdery mildew.

Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of horticultural oil, and a few drops of dish soap in a gallon of water. Spray the solution on the roses, focusing on affected areas.

Garlic Spray:

Garlic has natural antifungal and antibacterial properties.

Crush a few garlic cloves and steep them in hot water. Once cooled, strain the solution and spray it on the roses. This can help prevent and control fungal diseases.

Copper Spray:

Copper is a natural fungicide that can be effective against various fungal diseases.

Use copper-based fungicide sprays, following the product instructions carefully. Copper treatments are often applied during the dormant season.

Compost Tea:

Compost tea can enhance the overall health of the rose plant and improve its resistance to diseases.

Brew compost tea by soaking compost in water. Strain the liquid and use it as a foliar spray on the roses.

Soil pH?

Carnations prefer well-draining soil with a slightly alkaline pH. Amending the soil with organic matter, such as compost, can enhance its fertility and drainage.

What is the Spiritual Meaning of Carnations?

Carnations, particularly red ones, are commonly associated with love and deep affection. They can symbolize romantic love, admiration, and devotion. In this sense, carnations may carry a spiritual message of profound love and commitment.

White carnations are often linked to purity, innocence, and good luck. They are commonly used in religious ceremonies and spiritual rituals to represent pure love and divine blessings.

Stiffen the crochet petals to get this dramatic look. There are several ways to stiffen crochet petals. Below is a quick how to guide.

Starch:

Commercial fabric starch or homemade starch solutions can be used to stiffen crochet pieces. To make a homemade starch solution, mix equal parts cornstarch and cold water. Heat the mixture on the stove, stirring continuously until it thickens. Allow it to cool before using.

Dip the crochet piece into the starch solution or spray it evenly with a starch spray. Shape the piece as desired and let it air dry. Repeat the process for additional stiffness.

White Glue (PVA Glue) Mixture:

Mix white glue (PVA glue) with water in equal parts to create a solution. Dip or brush the crochet piece with the glue mixture, ensuring even coverage.

Shape the piece and let it dry completely. The glue will harden as it dries, providing stiffness to the crochet item.

Sugar Water Solution:

Create a sugar water solution by dissolving sugar in warm water. Use approximately 1 cup of sugar in 1 cup of water. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Dip or spray the crochet piece with the sugar water solution. Shape it as needed and allow it to dry thoroughly.

Cornstarch and Water Paste:

Mix cornstarch with water to create a paste. Use a 1:1 ratio or adjust as needed to achieve the desired consistency.

Apply the paste to the crochet item, shaping it as desired. Allow it to dry completely.

Mod Podge:

Mod Podge is a versatile sealer, glue, and finish that can be used to stiffen crochet pieces. Apply Mod Podge with a brush, making sure to cover the entire surface.

Shape the crochet piece and allow it to dry. Mod Podge dries clear and adds a protective coating.

Pull 2 and 2 loops together on opposite side times 3 so that you have all up 6 loops together (3 per side). Secure with a slip stitch. 7 sc across 1st 6 loops together.
Rose stem.

Before you work outside rose petals, begin making the rose stem. It is a lot easier to attach the larger rose petals if you have attached the smaller rose petals already to the stem. Use a sushi stick or barbecue stick. To make it easier to attach the yarn, one trick that I use is that I first wrap some wire across the stick. The wrap brown yarn across the stick and keep secure under some wire.
